“We’ve got news,” I declared.

Sage and I were sitting at a table with my co-workers, Tyson and Holden. Tyson’s girlfriend, Quinn, and Holden’s fiancée, Leni, were there as well.

It was roughly two weeks before Christmas and the six of us had decided to go out and get in the holiday spirit. Or, at least, that’s how the women had put it.

Sage had met Tyson and Quinn a few weeks ago when I’d taken her out for lunch one afternoon. Tyson and Quinn were grabbing some food to go because they were going to be babysitting some of his nieces and nephews. After I introduced Sage to my friends, the women had hit it off and exchanged numbers.

Now, we were here because they’d kept in contact with one another and set it all up. Quinn, who had met Leni months ago, brought her into the fold, which is why Holden and Leni were here as well.

The women had conspired behind our backs and decided that we needed to get together for dinner, shopping, and Christmas festivities. I wasn’t quite sure what the last part of that entailed, but I honestly didn’t care.

Since she’d moved back here from Oregon, Sage hadn’t really made a lot of new friends outside of work. Given the fact that we were together now, we were having a baby, and she wasn’t going to be leaving Windsor, I thought it was a good idea for her to start forging friendships. Quinn and Leni were sweet women, and I knew they’d be great people for Sage to have in her corner.

For those reasons, I didn’t put up a fight when Sage told me the plans for this evening. She was not only excited but also determined to create new traditions for the holidays. I wanted her to be happy, so if this was going to make that possible, I was all for it.

But before we came out tonight, Sage and I had decided that we wanted to share the news of her pregnancy with our friends. She was leaving it up to me to decide when the right time to share would be.

We’d all just finished our dinner, and I thought now was as good a time as any.

“We?” Quinn asked. “What news do we have?”

She was asking a question, but it was clear she already had an idea in her head as to what the answer might be.

I reached my hand out and held Sage’s. After giving her a squeeze there, I smiled and said, “Sage is pregnant. We’re having a baby.”

Tyson and Holden looked utterly shocked. Quinn and Leni were positively beaming at the news.

“Wow! That’s so exciting. Congratulations!” Leni declared.

“When are you due?” Quinn asked.

“June twelfth is the due date,” Sage answered. “I’m fourteen weeks now.”

“Congratulations,” Holden said.

That was followed by more congratulatory words from the rest of the table. We all sat for a little while longer as the women discussed more details of the pregnancy.

A little while later, we ended up in a Christmas shop in downtown Windsor.
